Windmill in Bruges, Belgium

Windmill in Bruges, Belgium

Bruges, Belgium is a pretty cool city that seems like it was frozen in time, because it kind of was.  The city has remained so similar to what it was hundreds of years ago largely because of the fact that its main economic driver, its river, started to fill-in.  As such, people left and people didn’t have as much money to change the city with the times.

This is what I find to be the most interesting thing about the city… that it’s economic destruction in the 1500’s is largely why it is such a beautiful city today.

That was a bit of an aside, considering the photo above is of a windmill, but I hope you enjoyed the mini history lesson :).

This windmill is one of 4 or 5 on the outskirts of the old city and it is really cool to see a real windmill in person, at least I think it is.  Unfortunately, none of these windmills are operational but you can go inside of one for a fee.

Walking through the old streets of Bruges, Belgium, avoiding the horses and the clamor of the noisy tourists and old people who have to yell to understand each other, I stumbled upon this courtyard inside of an old convent. The moment that you enter this place, everything goes quiet and you feel as though you are in another world – a better world; a more peaceful and loving world.

It is hard to describe how peaceful and tranquil this place makes you feel; it was like a little piece of heaven in the middle of a busy city.

This photo is from the Korenmarkt in Ghent, Belgium. This city really surprised me with its beauty and with the fact that most of the people in the city were actually Belgian, which is not the case for Brussels or Antwerp.

This city is the perfect mix of beautiful architecture, old-world feel, and modern young happening city. I liked this city more than Bruges in terms of feel and architecture and, if you are going through Belgium, this city is a must, even if only for a day trip.

You must go here!
